Chalet Girl

Okay, I’m going to be upfront, Chalet Girl was rubbish. It was predictable, the story line was jumpy and completely American. The thing is, it was British.
To be honest, I expected more. I expted more from Bill Nighy, I expted more from Bill Baily, I expected more from Britian. I was looking forward to it, and was disapointed completely. The lines were lame, and it’s attempted teen angst comedy failed immensely.
I know, I’m pretty much just slagging this movie off completely. There were a few good points. Billy Baily’s character was amusing, like Bill Baily usually is. The highlight of the whole film being when he couldn’t defrost his pre-made dinner, and settled with some dinner icy-pole. There were a other few funny parts, and a few nice parts. But I think the best part of the whole film was the blooper right at the end of the main credits at the end of the film.
It opens with a skate board tournement, where the hosts mention the great teen skate boarder, who had disapeared from compititions after the death of her mother. Kim, this ex-skate boarder, is stuck in a minimun wage job, living with her jobless father (Bill Baily) who is constantly ignoring overdue payment notices from the bank and is not longer skating. But her life takes a turn when she lands the job as a chalet girl, that is a servent, for a rich family’s holiday home in the Alps. Kim has never been to the mountains, but with her skate boarding history, soon finds her feet snowboarding. It just so happens there is a massive snow boarding compitition with the reward of 2500 euros. The money she needs desperately to pay off her dad’s bills. But she struggles with the jump in the track, because it reminds her of the car crash that killed her mother. Somewhere along the line she falls for the son of the rich family she is working for (Ed Westwick), who is actually engaged. Was a bit fuzzy on that part. It seems that all of a sudden they were snogging on the mountains.
So yeah, the film was not my cup of tea. I am a big fan of England, and seeing an English film that could have fooled me for an American film despite the accents, the whole thing was a disapointment. Not that I have anything against America, but the film was unsually American-ish and lacking the good old British Comedy. If it was written by Richard Curtis, then that would be another story. But if you love a bit of trash every now and again, something to cure your mid afternoon boredom, go for it. It’s got a few laughs, so why not. But just be prepared for the worst is all I’m saying.
two and half stars.
